This encapsulates really well many of the things i have loved about Bojack. But part of me also feels perpetually disturbed at a few different things:

1) That it goes largely unexamined that these same tropes in which we’re contemplating dignity and redemption are all so interwoven with privilege, wealth and fame/power (would we even discuss this kind of nuance in the human condition if Bojack and those around him weren’t so deeply entwined in the glamorous world of Hollywood?)

2) Relatedly, would people care as much or have as much empathy if Bojack were a person of color? This show still reinforces without really ever naming it how only white people in positions of power are universally worthy of redemption/notability/forgiveness/having their disturbing and fucked up “human condition” stories told

3) Why is Alison Brie voicing an Asian character? I know that this isn’t currently discussed a ton in the realm of cartoon and I understand the creative liberties argument in animated works, but what has gratuitously making this white woman-voiced Asian character ever really lent to the storyline or the broader complexity of the show’s narrative? And particularly in light of 1 and 2, this leaves a poor taste in my mouth.

Essentially, a big part of me loves Bojack for the way it’s done all of the things you’ve named (and especially for the unique way it’s portrayed mental illness), but I’m not going to miss it when it’s gone. I hope there are new shows that emerge that do better in some of the aspects that Bojack either got wrong or missed completely. I’m not super optimistic though — it’s not a coincidence that Tuca & Bertie (a cartoon featuring two hilarious women of color with clearly a more diverse writers room) was canceled.

But I guess appreciating something while also acknowledging its fuckery is the whole point of what you’ve written and the subject itself :)
