Thank you so much for reading and replying! Definitely agree that expectations for any major motion picture are inherently low, so I do see how she was operating within those confines (though in full honesty, I don't necessarily assume that any wealthy white cis woman in Hollywood totally "gets it" anyway, but that doesn't mean there aren't valuable nuggets of their perspectives/experiences that aren't valid or worth sharing).

I think some of my hope comes from seeing things like "Random Acts of Flyness" on HBO -- these rare gems that get through that are literally so mind-opening and groundbreaking that it really puts into perspective what depth of content (and whose voice) we are used to seeing, and what is so uncomfortable about expanding that.

For me, the history of feminism in the US in particular, and its deeply racist roots (the pioneers of the American feminist movement felt all too comfortable sacrificing Black people in their struggle for white women's suffrage and genuinely saw that as "progress") that I do feel dubious that the introduction of a fairly narrow definition of feminism is truly progressive when it's more "accessible" (which is to say, generally more comfortable). But these are very theoretical concepts, and it's just so difficult to measure what "progress" truly looks like in cases like this. But it's certainly interesting food for thought!

Thanks again for connecting!
