Thank you! Unfortunately, there are social but moreover medical realities that make inquiring about a person’s race (like their sex and gender) important. In the theme of this article, for example, Ashkenazi Jews have a genetic proclivity for Tay Sachs disease. Genetic differences exist, and while I agree that the notion of ranking them in a hierarchy is absurd and must go, I think in an ideal world we could have a reference for these things (including in medical contexts) without establishing judgment or hierarchies around them
