Oh, agree on "model minority" as not being good - I invoke that not at all to suggest it's good! Only to convey how in a racist conception of certain minorities as "aspirational" or "good," Jews are no longer even part of this horrific club of non-white posterchildren of aspirational immigrant behavior because we are now merely considered "white." It is better to do away with any framing of minorities as "model" or otherwise, because it is sweeping and discriminatory, and there is no benefit or need for these kinds of generalizations about any group of people.

That being said, I disagree about the framing of "systemic" and also about implicit bias not being systemic. Systems, or institutions, literally fuel ways of thinking about everything under the sun, including race (and gender etc). It's the reason why people and kids historically would assume if they heard "doctor" that it would be a man - partly because the vast majority of doctors were men, but also because society reinforced historical notions that women would generally be in the home or in more caretaker roles, and therefore a doctor most likely is AND should be a man.

Implicit bias is a natural function of the human brain. Every being has a brain specifically wired for biases, because it's how we make sense of the world. Societies tend to have more homogeneous/insular value systems because the way we teach and learn (in communities, in schools, through media, through religious institutions, etc) tends to adhere to collective values, which include a lot of subtle and yes sometimes insidious messages around what's "right" or "wrong."

But I do agree that there need to be systemic SOLUTIONS to systemic problems, and that is a major gap for these ignoramuses who prefer to advocate for anarchy from the comfort of their luxury apartments, calling for the destruction of all police until their iPhones get stolen.

Thanks so much for the kind words, also!
