Look up the actor who plays Ray. He’s putting on a thick accent which he does not have (he has NO accent), which is a racist trope Hollywood likes to have Brown people put on — think about the shopkeeper in The Simpson’s. There’s a lot of literature out there and even standup from South Asian writers/professors/actors/comedians about how this comprises the bulk of roles that are available to them in media. It serves to perpetuate the notion that this accent is some kind of comedic fodder.
If you’d have read the article I posted without pretense of anger and defensiveness you’d see that I understand and appreciate what this show means for gays, particularly white gays. Being a queer person myself I can appreciate that aspect of it, and by the way if you’d actually read the article you’d see that I too found humor in the show. It’s that it’s not mutually exclusive and the show can be BOTH funny and meaningful for [mainly white] gays and allies AND be problematic because of its racist and classist overtones. The title of my article was hyperbolic in the style of the show. Of course there’s worse crap out there. Lots of stuff people love is garbage. Part of me loves Princess Diaries 2 and it’s the most garbage movie I could conceive of. It sounds like YOU may be the one who is humorless when it comes to critique or any nuance in regards to the things you claim defiant love for.
