It's disgusting. The settlements are an atrocious human rights violation. Israel must abdicate the settlements immediately, regardless of whether Hamas is ready to acknowledge the existence of Israel/Jews. And Palestinians must be compensated and supported to rebuild their lives and heal in their land. Yet whether you think so or not, it IS complicated to have a neighbor that is 100% intent on your total and complete destruction in a region where everyone else feels the same way--perhaps justifiably on the part of Palestinian people. What happens when Palestine has full statehood and sovereignty in the land that is now Territories, but now they have full freedom to carry out civilian attacks against Israel? The goal of Hamas at present is clear, no Jews on any of this land; ceding the Territories still wouldn't satiate the appetite for having the entire region be Palestinian, without Jews.
Sheikh Jarrah was legally bought and owned by Jewish people at the end of the 19th century. During the 1950s, Jordan illegally obtained the land and bought 28 homes on it for Palestinian residency. After the war in 1967 (the one I referenced below where the Arab world united to attempt to wipe Israel off the map), the land was annexed back to Israel to attempt to unify Jerusalem and returned to the original owners. Later, an Israel NGO purchased the land and most of the tenants left on their own accord, but four families remained and refused to pay rent for years. The result was multiple court cases around property disputes, which they lost, building up to the events that have happened over the past week, which Palestinian leaders have weaponized to incite riots.
I don't think it's right for them to be evicted, but I think it's a little more complicated than just another oversimplification of "land theft."
