I mean, it seems more than a little bizarre to assert that any given outfit choice happens in a vacuum. That is why many people have always and continue to choose to dress in patterns that are reflective of society at large, and the specific subsets of society they most identify (or yearn to fit in) with.
Clothing is highly symbolic. Indeed, any given person may *feel* quite certain they are deciding only for themselves what they wish to portray in a public setting, but the pressures and contexts of conformity, appropriateness and social capital will always be strong underlying factors in the decision-making process. It is sheer fantasy to suggest otherwise
