Hey James, I’m such a huge fan of your work and am also a very scared queer person, terrified and disgusted about what is happening to my trans siblings in particular in this country at this time.
But I’m also a Jewish person who happens to be very scared of the rising antisemitism that has generated very real terror for me and my community at this time, and I have to say I found this article disappointing. We can highlight the plight of LGBTQ+ folx and the urgency of addressing the situation without A) unintentionally suggesting that Jewish people have some unfair or undeserved advantage as it pertains to equity in this country (which, without you realizing it both undermines the urgency of antisemitism— which can and does coexist with all other forms of bigotry— and unintentionally pointing to an antisemitic trope that Jews have some form of overarching control in this country that unfairly renders us more powerful than any other minority), and B) erasing the Jewish LGBTQ+ folx who are scared right now for all of the reasons mentioned above.
If you feel like it’s okay to insert “Jewish” in here as a means to emphasize your point, I would also ask you to envision whether you would have thought it appropriate to insert any other marginalized minority group in there to do the same. If not, there could be a chance that some internalized antisemitism could be involved (the idea that weaponizing alleged Jewish privilege would somehow be “punching up” whereas any other minority would not be).
I really hope you take this to heart. I am grateful for your commitment to continued advocacy and we all make mistakes, so this is my earnest attempt to call in instead of calling out :)
