Hey Art, thanks for the comment--I definitely hear that and know that cops are likely to designate that, especially for poor white women. I worked in a women's DV shelter for years and saw how universally terrible the cops handle most of these kinds of cases. My point in the article was more specifically a rebuttal to the narrative that the main thing that's "racist" about this issue is the disparity in media coverage. From what I understand, this phenomenon does also happen at higher rates among missing Black women, which wouldn't surprise me. And that doesn't erase the universality of the phenomenon (and the need to fix/address all of that), but I want to illustrate to the folks who are concerned about media disparities that there are far more actionable and urgent matters that can be addressed in a much more productive/healthy way :)
