Great point — the history of politicization on this particular issue is really fascinating and clearly a foundational part of how each of the prevailing narratives have taken root.
I also wonder what specifically about that time (I’m sure activism and the feminist movement of the 1960s played a role, leading up to Roe V Wade, among other things) was so galvanizing to a partisan narrative that suddenly took shape on religious lines in that way. It would seem it has remained fairly consistent since then in some of that partisan divide, although it’s interesting that major legislative (and cultural) change and public attention are on abortion again now.
